Saguna Brahman
Dear Friends:
What is SaguNa Brahman? SaguNa Brahman does not mean Brahman who is
under guNas. God is guNAtita, beyond guNas. He merely co-exists with
guNas. God is neither sattvic, rajasik or tamasik. But His
manifestations may be. In fact, as written in the Gita, the reason God
does the bhuta-kara, bhAva-kara, and udbhava-kara karmas (SBG 8.3) but
still remains undoer (akrtA) (SBG 4.13), is because He does not do it
under attachment (SBG 9.9) to guNas (SBG 13.14), and it becomes a give-away
(visR^ijAmi SBG 9.8). Therefore, SaguNa Brahman is merely a manner of
description, in reality He is nirguNa (SBG 13.14).
On the other hand, in the anthropomorphic descriptions, God is truly
saguNa, God laughs, cries, becomes happy, becomes angry etc, very much
unlike the refelction of the nirguNa brahman in the God-connected person
(brahmabhutaH prasannAtmA na shochati na kaN^kshati (SBG 18.54)
However, this is not true in His lila manifestations. Such a saguNa
brahman might be hiraNyagarbha or brahmA, the Lord of rajaguNa.
With best regards,
Dhruba.
