The engraving of `Om' on a coin recently found in
Thane in Maharashtra, will challenge
historians' claim that' `Om' originated in the
ninth or tenth century. The coin is almost
2,000 years old.
Six coin were handed over to the Institute of
Oriental Studies in Thana recently. The
coins were found near the Siddheshwar Lake in the
Khopat area where the state
transport workshop is situated. Incidentally, a
six-and-a-half-feet statue of Lord Brahma
was unearthed during the desilting of the lake a
few months ago. "The finding of the idol
proved beyond doubt that Thane was a seat of an
important study centre during the
regime of Shilahar dynasty," said Vijay Bedekar of
the institute.
He said the coin, showing a lion facing right,
which was found here might be around
2,000 years old and was the first of the coins in
the country. "We see it as a
breakthrough and it further establishes the fact
that Thane was an ancient civilised city
and an important centre of trade and commerce,"
said Mr Bedekar.
Historian VV Mirashi has recorded the fact that the
symbol of `Om' was used on coins
in the ninth or tenth century.
