I do believe that the following post from the days when
they were trying to get votes for soc.religion.vaishnava
while opposing the idea of soc.religion.hindu.vaishnava
addresses the question:
=== SRV Proponent Says Vaishnav Not Hindu ===============

: So what is i `Hindu': a cultural identity? a racial

: And, to those `vaishanavas' who don't want to

:
: The argument that `Hindu' is an external term has a

: `Dharma' out of consideration for feelings of the

: they call themselves `Deutsch'? Does this mean that
: Germanic cultural identity is a fiction?
:
: Talking about the term `Jew/Judaism': The name comes
: the tribal name. Yet are not Bene Israeli of India,
: Ethiopian Jews and European Jews are all considered
: to be Jews. Shall we reject the usage based on the
: etymology of the word?
:
: If Vaishanavas want to distance themselves the way
: Christians did from Jews, it is their business. Let
: us hope that Vaishnavas don't start any pograms.

In my opinion, we Hindus can begin righting the wrong by
renaming SRV to
soc.religion.hindu.vaishnav
Dhanyavaad.
