This is a traditional custom, there is no big ideology behind it as far as
I know. Women wear a "forehead dot" (We call it a chandalo in Gujarati)
to show they are married. Men usually make a chandalo as part of their
morning prayers. As part of the service in the mandir (or temple) we put
a chandalo on God. There it is a gesture of respect.

Again don't know and from my perspective don't care. It's been a practice
since very ancient times though.
