I have been told that in the ancient days, Indian men used to practice
archery with their wives. A red dot was worn on the forehead of thier
wives to help them perfect the aiming skills. Fortunately, them being
lousy archers, the wives (and the practice) survived. In those cases
where a husband was a good aimer, he had several wives, just in case.
This is also the reason why widows do not have the red dot.
