On one level you may not identify murugan with ayyappan. But I have
read an argument relating ayyappan and murugan. murugan is the son of
shiva and paarvathi. Paarvathi is feminine aspect of Vishnu, she is
also called naarayaNi. ayyapan is considered as a child of shiva and
mohini, again mohini is the feminine aspect of vishnu. Hence in a way
murugan is identical to ayyappan. It is thought that murugan took the
form and name of ayyappan and came down again. But this identity
hypothesis is not very prevalent and I learned this very recently.
\aside
murugan is the most popular deity in TN. One of my friend working in
Frontline told me that they did a survey and found that murugan tops
the list.
In my last post I made some typos, like typing murugaan instead of
murugan, I apologize for the typos. I will end this post with another
devotional stanza on murugan. It is called vazhith thuNai.
vizhikkuth thuNai thirumen malarpaathangaL meymai kunRaa
mozhikkuth thuNai murugaa enum naamam munbu cheytha
pazhikkuth thuNai panniruthOLum paasaangusamum payan^tha thani
vazhikkuth thuNai vadivelum chengOdan mayuramamE
( again it is from my memory, I apologize for the typos and other
errors)
