I agree with you that Buddhism emphasizes suffering much more than Hinduism.
The idea is in the Upanishads but Buddha gives it a center stage. Hinduism
has the idea of the householder who will gradually prepare herself for
enlightenment. My feeling is that Buddhism (at least in theory) is more
ascetic oriented.
