The place between the foreheads is supposed to be vulnerable spot.
A person with spiritual powers can bring another person into trance by
looking intensely at the centre of  forehead --- as per beliefs.
The women wear it as a protection.
You may also refer the book "Am I a Hindu" where answers to such 
questions are available.
