It should bother every Dharmik person. The primary sense of the word
"linga" is "sign, token, emblem, or distinguishing characteristic".
Nothing can be farther than the truth than saying linga means only
sex organ. Brahman is unlimited. But He is worshipped in many
different finite forms, the linga being one of them. The linga is
a sign or image of the formless, unlimited Brahman.
Shivalinga should remind you of "yupa-stambha" the sacrificial
pillar of the Vedas. Westerners like to think of the linga as the
sex organ of Shiva, because they are interested in portraying
Hinduism as a primitive culture. It is a sad to see educated Indians
accepting this belief.It is sadder still to see educated Indians with
an awareness of their religion accepting this absurd theory.
