Hmm... Actually I've heard this from my teachers but I don't know the
source. In the Bhagavat Purana it says Maharshi Veda Vyas taught the 4
Vedas to four of his students and the Purana-Itihasa to Romaharshana who
taught it to his son Suta Pauranik. A footnote to this in the Gujarati
literal translation of the Bhagavat Purana by Girijashankar Mayashankar
Shastri repeats the 1 to 18 story but it doesn't give a source either.
