Why on earth should any Dharmik person give a flying leap whether
Westerners think our religion is primitive or not? The actual difference
between me and the other posters on this thread in terms of belief is
miniscule. What prompted me to respond is this attitude that we should be
constantly looking over our shoulder at the Christians.

Some of our rites involve cow's excrement which a Westerner would find
funny. Should we stop. Or how about the guy with the elephants head we
worship. That's really "primitive", should we get rid of Ganesh Bhagawan?
Now it's Shravan mas, every day I wear a tripund of bhasma. Even during
the rest of the year I have a "red dot" and no doubt the Westerners find
this absolutely hilarious. Should I stop? There are any number of things
we do which a foreigner wouldn't understand. So what?

I got involved in this because my biggest fear is that some junior
aurangzebs armed with nothing more than the writings of a
Sanskrt-illiterate Bengali clerk will attempt to "improve" my religion out
of existance.
