KASHMIRI HINDUS IN CITY TO BOYCOTT ELECTIONS

Over 300 displaced Kashmiri Hindu families, now living
in and around Bangalore, have decided to boycott the
forthcoming Assembly elections in their home-state.

Mattoo told reporters here today that the displaced
Kashmiri Hindus, who enjoyed the right to vote through
postal ballots in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly
elections would not participate in the elections to
protest against the indifference of the Centre towards
their plight.
Innumerable pleas by these families, which were forced
to leave Kashmir in 1990, for rehabilitation, education,
health care and employment had fallen on the deaf ears
of the authorities concerned, he said.
He termed the Centre`s claim that normalcy had been
restored in the valley as a political stunt. The
displaced Hindu families, which were the original
inhabitants of the valley, were not taken into
confidence while announcing the elections. The
Government had gone out of the way to appeasing the
militants, but turned a blind eye towards the agony and
sufferings of the Hindus who were victims of the
militancy.
He said in the recently announced financial package
for the people of Kashmir, the Centre had decided to
write off loans up to Rs. 50,000, but the Samithi`s
pleas for the last six years for the waiver of loans
incurred by its members for housing, vehicles and other
consumers items were not considered by the government.
The Samithi members were now being forced to repay their
loans even though they had left behind the items they
had purchased by using the loans.
He said the Samithi had also been making
representation to the successive governments in
Karnataka, but no Government had so far done anything to
reduce their sufferings.
