In his first interview to the press after returning to the city,
controversial artist M. F. Husain said the outrage regarding his
'offensive' sketch of goddess Saraswati was a natural reaction from
some section of society. When asked whether he is sorry for what
has happened, the noted painter emphatically said "No"
"I did issue a statement apologising if my work had unintentionally
hurt anyone's sentiments. But that is because my love for humanity
is greater than my love for art. otherwise, I have always shown the
greatest respect for religion. My series on the nine major
religions was even displayed at the 50th anniversary celebrations
of the United Nations. Does this imply any ill-feeling for
different faiths?"
Then why did he choose to stay back in London and not try to end
the controversy in this country? "I was not hiding from anybody. I
go abroad every year to paint in different surroundings. My work
was in progress and I could not leave until recently. I am open to
debate and discussion. But people too should be sensible. Otherwise
what is the use? I have co-operated with the police in their
investigations. I have nothing to be afraid of."
And if he is indeed not afraid, why is he living in such secrecy in
a hotel suite? "Well, false bravado is of no use. It is always
better to take a few precautions. Moreover, I have come here to
paint. There are so many people at home that I always check into a
hotel when I want to concentrate."
The artist is currently working on a series to commemorate 50 years
of the country's independence.
