There is a wonderful little booklet from Vedanta Press called _Om,
Gayatri and Sandhya_ which provides good commentary on the Gayatri
mantra, as well as on the significance of Om, and the Sandhya puja or
worship traditionally performed at dawn, noon, and dusk by Hindus.
There is also a detailed outline of Sandhya with Devanagari script,
transliterated Sanskrit, and English translation. The Gayatri forms a
vital part of Sandhya; in fact, through Sandhya, we have a way to tap
the power of Gayatri, incorporating it into our lives. Swami
Mukhyananda, who wrote _Om, Gayatri and Sandhya_, advocates that both
men and women do this puja.
Sandhya has a beautiful contemplative essence to it which flows into the
rest of our day. Performed thrice daily, ideally (I admit I do not
perform it regularly), Sandhya is like the three-legged milking stool
which provides stability when placed on rough floor or ground.
I had a local bookstore special order _Om, Gayatri and Sandhya_ for me
from Vedanta Press; I am sure there is a Vedanta Press source in the
UK. The cost was Cdn$5.95, and it took about three weeks for the book
to come.
I hope this helps.
