The story, approximately, goes like this. Valmiki used to be a
highway robber. Once three rishis came along. He tried to rob them
too. They made him aware of the consequences of his evil deeds (which
he claimed to be doing for the benefit of his wife and children).
However when he asked wife and children if they were willing also to
share the consequences with him, they refused to do so.
He now listened carefully to the teaching of the three rishis. They
told him the story of Shri Rama and also taught him the mantra Rama.
Valmiki started repeating it, and the sages left.
When they came back after many years, they found Valmiki in deep
meditation, so much so that he had not noticed that the ants had built
an ant-hill all around his body (hence his name Valmiki = ant or
ant-hill?).
But also he had inadvertently changed his mantra from rama to mara (=
death), yet it worked because he used it with devotion.
------------
This story is often told but nobody has been able to give me the
source. I have looked at the beginning of Valimik's own Ramayana and
it is not there.
Who can help?
Please reply by email since I travel a lot and can not always read
everything that appears in this group.
Thank you.
