The Brahma Samhita, published by the Bhaktivdanta Book Trust, contains
verses spoken by Lord Brahma himself (the first born living being of
this universe), who was the first person to attain spiritual
enlightenment via hearing the flute sound of Lord Sri Krishna (which
vibrates the original supreme gayatri mantra---kama gayatri), thus
attaining the status of twice-born (spiritual initiation). Lord
Brahma was Sri Krishna's first disciple and is the head the one of the
four Vaisnava sampradayas (disciplic successions).

His sampradaya, the Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya-Sampradaya, continues to
transmit this orginal gayatri mantra given by Sri Krishna to Brahma in
an unbroken chain of disciplic succession. The modern day Hare
Krishna's are the most notable current-link and representatives of
Lord Brahma's disciplic succession, though there are other
representatives of the four Vaisnava sampradayas in India, and
recently now in different parts of the world.

The most important principle of any mantra, is receiving it from one
of these bona fide disciplic successions that are deputed by Lord
Krishna to function as His ambassadors and representatives for the
transmission of this spiritual sound vibration.

Manufactured mantras and mantras received from sources outside the
authorized disciplic successions (apasampradayas) will not be
effective or produce the desired results. Thus, receiving the mantra
from a bona fide source, is as, or more important than the chanting of
it.

Many Hindus unknowingly receive the gayatri mantra from unauthorized
sources (books, so-called svamis and gurus, etc.). Though the
external chanting of the mantras may appear to be the same the potency
is as different as bullets and blanks. The gayatri mantra, to be
effective and potent, must be received by a bona fide guru in
disciplic succession, who represents one of the 4 Vaisnava sampradayas
begun by Lord Krishna for this purpose.

Hearing the pure spiritual sound vibration (sabda brahma) from a pure
spiritual source is like pure milk, whereas the same apparently white
milk, when touched by the lips of a serpent (one who is against
Krishna's principle of disciplic succession--He mentions in
Bhagavad-Gita 4.2) the same milk produces poisonous effects. So there
is a quality to the hearing and chanting of the mantra.

Krishna also mentions in the Bhagavad-gita that "Of poetry I am the
Gayatri." (Bhagavad-Gita As It Is 10.35)

I hope this helps you.
