REQUEST : Hindu cosmology?

Hello, I need information about how the hindus viewed the earth and the
universe for a project on ancient indian astronomy (esp. about
Brahmagupta, the 7th century, and how he changed the ancient beliefs).
I've heard that ancient hindus viewed the earth as a half-shere, supported
by elephants, sitting on top of a giant turtle. Can someone give me more
details about this view, what are the symbolisms, what was the exact idea
they had of the universe? I would really appreciate it if someone could
answer these questions by email, without giving me world wide web sources
to look up, since I don't have access to it.

Thanks in advance to everyone,
