I am not a frequent poster to this newsgroup, but the issue seems to be
sufficiently seminal to merit a response. Apart from the theological issues
which have been explored by Mani, and which definitely have their place in
the scheme of things, I am more concerned with the attempt to secularize
idolatry to fit it within the realm of abstracted Western Judeo-Christian
spiritualism.

This is a contextual blunder and future generations of practising Hindus
will be fettered by these essentially inane interpretations. The
psychological trauma that the proponents of these hackneyed views suffer
from is only balanced by their deep sense of ideological confusion.

We do not need APOLOGISTS, however well intentioned they are. We need
CHAMPIONS of the faith who are ready to reinterpret their beliefs (as
Hindius have always done thru millenia) in the light of their own spiritual
experiences. This would mandate that they accept Hinduism as it is without
trying to distort its essential Omniscience.

Yes, most Hindus are idol worshippers and proud to be so. Yes we are
polytheistic in practise and sometimes animistic too. I am sick of
arguments which say that even though we worship many gods (a classical case
of polytheism) the Vedas are immutably monotheistic, because it talks of
Brahman as One. This is true but the way it is presented always seems so
apologetic, febrile and unctious. So what? This chain of reasoning shows a
pre-conditioning and proclivity to automatically rate religins which are
monotheistic, and have a spiritual prophet as superior to religions which
do not profess to be the same. That is the sad legacy of our mindless
indoctrination, because we do not challenge these beliefs and provide
spirited rebuttals.

Let us drink of the liberating spirit of Hinduism which allows atheists,
agnostics and just about everybody to be part of the effulgent diaspora if
they so desire. Hinduism does not have pre-conditions so by the same token
its so called adherents should not seek to encapsulate and imprision it's
spirit within the confines of their own limitations. This sort of tolerance
and respect for the individual is sorely lacking in most of the *revealed*
faiths that fight for the allegiance of our hearts and souls.
