Hans,

This has already been explained a number of times and references made to
various homepages, but ....

1. The Cow is not a "Goddess".
2. The Cow is to be protected as she provides us with milk, butter, cream,
etc.
3. The Cow by nature has motherly qualities and provides sustanance to us
all. How can we cut the
throat of our mother ?
4. Lord Krishna and his past times are intamately linked and the Cow
reminds of Sri Krishna.
5. The Vedas ask us to protect the Cow and other beings.

There is a posting in this NG that is called "Why ?" that discusses some of
these things.

The above is just an overview.
