Such "divisive" ideas have existed for a very long time now, atleast 1500
years (probably more). Both shaivites and vaishnavites feel that they have to
establish the "supremacy" of their respective devata-s. Let them have their
fun.
It also provides good humor I must say. Eg, explanations of why rudra, shiva,
nIlakanTha etc all represent vishhNu and similar explanations of how nArAyaNa,
vishhNu etc represent shiva never fail to provide humor. The algorithm goes
something like this:
1. rudra actually means vishhNu in the shvetAshvatara upanishhad, (wave hands
wildly and obfuscate issues by introducing extraneous matter).
2. If the other party is not convinced, repeat step 1 till he accepts :-)
