This is the kind of reactionary revisionism that I dislike.
You may not choose to believe that the Vedas are polytheistic,
perhaps because you find it distasteful, or perhaps because
you don't want to give in to Western opinion.
However, it is undeniable that many, many Hindus of the past
viewed the Vedas polytheistically. In the brahminical
tradition, the pUrva-mImAmsakas were not only Vedic polytheists
but bordered on atheism. If one were to broadly classify much
of village Hinduism, it is nothing but a form of polytheism.
But why do I sense a defensiveness in your words? What is
inherently wrong with these traditional polytheistic beliefs?
Hindu culture has always been wonderfully diverse in beliefs
and practices. We may not always agree or like how our neighbor
practices his faith, but we should also not misunderstand it
and claim that it does not exist.
