A grand Shiva temple in Oman, an avowed Islamic country?
Yes. Though a surprise, it has become a reality, thanks to the
secular credentials of the Sultan of Oman, Mr. Al-Qaboos, according
to the Civil Aviation Minister, Mr. C. M. Ibrahim. The temple was
reported to be the First one in any Islamic country, he said.
Disclosing this to presspersons here today, Mr. Ibrahim said the
Sultan of Oman has exploded the myth that the Gulf countries do not
encourage followers of other faiths.
Not just this. The Sultan, a friend of India, had accorded
citizenship to Hindus staying in the Sultanate. Mr. Bhairamji
Khimji, a businessman, who became the first non-Muslim citizen, was
honoured with the title of Sheikh.
Another friendly gesture towards Hindus in the Sultanate was a
separate cremation ground being earmarked for the community. The
Sultan was likely to visit India soon, said Mr. Ibrahim.
