I can't say that I know anything extensive about the Swaminarayan
folks, but I did attend one of their events a few weeks ago for Ram
Navami. It consisted of about 3 hours of bhajans in Gujarati followed
by taking prasadam. It took place in a community center, and I was one
of the few non-regulars there - it certainly wasn't a "public"
event. I've heard that they consider Swaminarayan to be an avatar, but
in their closing chant after each song, it wasn't indicated. They said
"Swaminarayan ki jai, Ramchandra Bhagawan ki jai." There was a
picture of Swaminarayan on the makeshift altar, but there was a larger
one of Ram, Lakshman, Sita, and Hanuman.

If there was some "unacceptable practice," I certainly did not see it,
so I would view such "exposes" with a little bit of skepticism. Every
group has some bad apples, and if someone goes looking only for the
bad, that's all they'll find.
