The best books I found so far are
1. by Judit Tyberg "First lessons on Sanskrit grammar and reading"
2. by Judit Tyberg "The language of Gods"
The approach taken in the books is perfect - from Scriptures/manuscripts
to the language, not as usual - through the volumes of tiresome
grammar..

Both books are available through East-West Cultural Center in
California, they have web page somewhere.

I am not a specialist, I just started!
