REQUEST: Sadhus and Drugs

Hi!
I'm working on a thesis conerning altered states of consciousness, and
I am looking for information on the religious context of use of
charas, ganja, bhang and datura among the sadhus. I have noticed that
quite a few sadhus are using these substances, and I know that one of
Shiva's aspects, Shankar, are connected to charas. But I have problems
finding any information of this in literature on hinduism. Even books
which deal especially with the sadhus fail to mention this connection,
though they often picture holy men smoking their chillam.
Is there anyone who have som suggestions about books which cover this
topic or can fill me in with som details, I'll be very thankful.
