i'm a student of southeast asian art here in toronto.
my impression of the relationship between buddhism and hinduism goes
something like this:
buddha was born and lived a hindu. buddhist art and buddhist practice in
india was born out of and exists within hindu belief and practice.
in the carribean, one will find shrines of christian saints beside nigerian
gods and goddesses, just as buddha was just another god within the hindu
pantheon. i think he is generally thought of as another avatar of visnu.
this is why buddhism rose in popularity in india (the buddhist period in
india is generally from about the 2nd century b.c. til about the middle of
the fifth century a.d.) King Asoka sought to unite a culturally and
geographically diverse india with buddhism.
in terms of actual doctrine, in all cases of the rise and spread of
buddhism in southeast asia, it has been shaped by the indiginous beliefs of
that area. for example, an understanding of chinese buddhism relies on an
understanding of the tao, and an understanding of zen is aided by knowledge
of shinto.
my mind is muddy, i can't think of too much more.. i hope this helps some.
