When the joint family system is breaking in India, there is the need
for development of an alternative system to take care of the elders.
We came across a project which addresses itself to the issue, and is
implementing a MODEL SENIOR CITIZENS' HOME PROJECT, structured around a
Community Centre, with the motto of DIGNITY AND PEACE!
NAYA JYOTI CHARITIES TRUST Project in Madras, is a pioneering work
devoted to public charitable service to seniors in the evening of their
lives. The objective of the project is philanthropy and innovation. The
Home will provide to care for the physical, mental and spiritual needs
of the elders. The Trustees have donated 44 per cent of the Total
Capital Cost and are subsidizing the running costs also. Together with
support from other donors, the Trust provides subsidies of 70 percent of
capital cost and about 25
to 30 percent of running costs to the guests. As many of the
Non-Resident Indians living in U.S. and Canada are concerned about the
care of their parents and elders, the Model Home will be of interest to
them. This high-quality Home provides the guests excellent facilities
including residence, food, services, medical arrangements, prayer,
library, and entertainment. The subsidy element makes the total benefits
substantial. The families of three Non-Resident Indians have already
enrolled and are staying in the Home. We believe this scheme will be
of interest our readers: (I) to support some laudable activity serving
the elders; and (ii) to avail of the facilities to serve their own
