: matsya - fish. The collective five is called the pa.ncha makra. However,
: note that this is not "the shakta path" but rather vAmachAra, _one_ of
: the branches of shaktism. This is _not_ mainstream shaktism and has been
: denounced vociferously by the classical commentator laxmIdhara.
: There are lots of people (I have met a few myself) who follow the
: _proper_ shakta worship. Most of vAmAchara is merely a glorification of
: crass hedonism and the regular worshipers of shakti don't consider it as
: essential, in fact they denounce the very concept of pa.ncha makra.
VamaMarga and DakshinaMarga are the right and left followers.
The VamaMarga people tend to follow and great souls followed it.
But as you said it is not necessary.
