REQUEST : The "evil eye"

I teach a high school parenting education class for pregant or parenting
teenagers. One of my students brought her child to the nursery (on our
campus) with a pink string around his wrist. She explained to me that it was
to ward off the evil eye and that it was a religious belief. She is Hindu.
My concern if for the child who is just starting to pull up on things and
take his first steps. Since the nursery school on the high school campus and
is licensed by the state, the director and I feel that having the string(s)
around the baby's wrist is a safety problem.
I don't want to disregard or insult her belief, so I am asking for assistance
in finding her an alternative method of warding off the "evil eye". I
understand her belief is strong and she is just following her customs. Can
you help?
