The World Archaeological Congress which created a controversy, three years
ago here by discussing the Ayodhya issue has decided to reopen the topic at
its next meeting in May 1998 to be held on the Island of Brac in Croatia,
the congress authorities have announced.

The full WAC Inter-Congress at "the destruction and conservation of
cultural property" is being hosted by the Croatian Archaeological Society.
The Ayodhya issue will be discussed in a, special session entitled, 'The
destruction of cultural property in war and ethnic conflict; Policies for
subsequent Restoration'.

A WAC circular to participants says "Inter-congress provides the
opportunity for fulfilment of the motion passed by the council of the World
Archaeological Congress at New Delhi in December 1994, that the issue of
the destruction of the Babri Masjid Mosque at Ayodhya should be openly
discussed by WAC at the earliest opportunity".

One full day of the five-day conference will be devoted to the Ayodhya
issue, according to the organisers. The discussions will focus on the
history of Ayodhya and archaeological interpretation of the excavations and
the role of the mass media and political parties in the Ayodhya issue.

The conference will also discuss about what went wrong in the 1994 New
Delhi conference which drew flak for opening the Ayodhya issue. According
to the WAC circular, the main discussion on Ayodhya will be followed by
series of small group meetings on identified topics.
