REQUEST : Questions on Ramayana

Hi everyone,

I have been doing some research on the Ramayana but am finding each
version I read the ending seems somewhat vague. For example, one version
I read states that Rama kills Ravana after having trouble cutting off ten
heads. It says he eventually kills Ravana with a "Brahma weapon"
fashioned by the sage Agastya but doesn't explain what this weapon is or
how it manages to kill a god. Can anyone explain this to me?

There also seems to be another version where Rama takes Ravana on a
trip to some mountain with flowers and women and then Rama disappears,
leaving Ravana alone to figure out the nature of his reality. I don't get
this one either. Anyone explain that to me?

It seems to me, I am missing the point of this story. If Dharma is
about following one's role in life than Ravana has done his job just as
well as Rama. Of course, he's reaping a bunch of bad karma but maybe he's
just paying back Rama for something he did to him before? Also, if Rama's
dharma is to get rid of Ravana doesn't this conflict with his karma
because morally it wouldn't be right to kill another being? I thought
Rama was revered because he exalted his dharma to his fellow human beings
and yet it takes his own wife being upducted for him to get up and act
against Ravana. Wasn't the demon Ravana causing all kinds of havoc before
then? Why is this seen as good dharma when Rama's actions were based on
personal gain?

One last thought, I understand the Hindu religion is based on
polarities, a lot of the time. The male principle is always balanced
witht the female principle. Is this why Rama who is in contemplation in
the forest *MUST* act to save Sita, because the world is unbalanced if
his female principle is taken? If so, what would the demon Ravana
represent?

Since I am not Indian and am just researching this for some writing
I'm doing, I hope I haven't offended anyone with my questions. I would
appreciate any response to these questions. Thanks.

Claire
