The biggest difference between the two is that the Hindus believe in a perpanent soul (called Atman) and the buddists do not believe in a perpenant soul. This is the main reason that Hinduism split into two religions - Hinduism and Buddism.

To your other question: How can I become a Hindu? You must be born into the Hindu religion to become a Hindu. They don't mind people practicing the religion, but they can never become an actual Hindu.

If you are really interested in this kind of religion, look into Hare Krishna. This was a movement in the U.S. kind of an off branch of Hinduism.
