The main difference lies in the name and form that the worshipper uses to direct the mind toward the divine. A temple may have statutes representing various expressions of God. (The Hindu has been incorrectly described as a worshipper of idols. In fact, the worship is directed to the divine itself.) As well, there is the difference in language and the difference in ritual.
But, as it is with Jews, Christians, Moslems, and men and women of every faith, the purpose of the temple or church is to provide a place and opportunity for a community of worshippers to express their love of the Divine.
If there is a Hindu temple near you, considering going to a service. Just be prepared to take your shoes off at the entrance. No special clothing, such as a suit, is required. Just dress comfortably. Expect to sit on cloth covering the floor. If you think your back needs more support, don't be afraid to sit at the back against the wall. Some temples provide chairs along the back wall for those who feel the need. Please note that the women and men sit on different sides of the temple.
