My two cents:

I think the king was Ravana who was a devotee of Shiva though he hated Rama.

This relates to the Indian proverb heard sometimes:

If you hate GOD passionately, it takes only three lifetimes to reach him while if you
love GOD strongly, it will take seven lifetimes to reach HIM. (Hate is stronger than 
love in the sense that when one hates somebody, that person is always in the mind of
the hater)
