India's Hindu party vows to fight corruption
NEW DELHI, Jan 16 (Reuter) - The Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) on Monday launched its campaign for assembly elections in six states
with a call to fight corruption, a local news agency reported.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted BJP president Lal Krishan Advani,
who released a party statement for the February polls, as saying his party
offered a stable alternative to Congress Party rule in the six states.
The BJP has been moving steadily towards securing a majority in the next
general elections, Advani was quoted as saying. The next parliamentary
elections are due in 1996.
Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao's Congress Party, facing charges of
corruption from opposition, received a severe drubbing in assembly elections
to five states held in November.
Advani said the Congress Party had adopted corruption as a way of life
and surrounded itself with criminals, conferring on them legitimacy and
respectability.
