Indian chosen for NASA astronaut program

Dr. Kalpana Chawla who serves as a support contractor at the NASA
Ames Research Center conducting research in the areas of Computa-
tional Fluid Dynamics has been chosen as an Astronaut Candidate.
Dr. Chawla was one among the six civilian mission specialists
selected this year for the U.S Astronaut Corps. She will soon be
heading to Johnson Space Center to begin year long training and
later to prepare for assignments on shuttle missions. According
to Dr.Chawla, she could be on a Space Shuttle in about 3 years
from now.
Now a U.S citizen, Dr Chawla comes from Karnal, India. She had
her bachelor's degree from Punjab Engineering College, M.S and a
doctorate from Univ. of Texas and Colorado resp. She's been at
Ames for the past six years.
Dr. Chawla is an avid flier with over 650 hours of flying. In the
Ames campus publication, she's been called as a "very qualified
researcher, diligent, first-rate and very capable".
