MOVIE STAR KINGSLEY: "THE PREJUDICE I ENCOUNTERED IN BRITAIN"

Deutsche Presse-Agentur
  New Delhi, Jan 23
Oscar-winning actor Ben Kingsley Monday spoke Monday of the prejudice
he had encountered in Britain, saying that only after he changed his name
from Krishna Banji did he get to play the role of Gandhi in Richard
Attenborough's classic movie.
Kingsley, in New Delhi to promote another Oscar-winning film,
"Schindler's List", to be released in India soon in English and Hindi,
said: "The British show it (prejudice) in subtle nuances."
The 49-year-old actor, whose forefathers hailed from Jamnagar in the
western Indian state of Gujarat, said it was strange that he was not
getting any roles, despite clearing the screen tests, when he had his
original name.
"The producers were propably finding it difficult how to accomodate
the name Krishna Banji in any role," he said. It was then he decided to
change his name and "it worked wonders", Kingsley said, showing
unmistakable anger.
Asked if it was some sort of prejudice which came in the way,
Kingsley said:
"Yes, prejudice is the appropriate word, I think."
