Dear All:
I am writing to alert all members of the Indian community as well
as all American to help prevent a tragedy from happening.
In Edison, NJ every year a NAVRATRI function is held for the
Northeast US. But this year the council of Edison is not allowing
the occasion to be celebrated. Why, too much noise. But, they do
not have any formal complaints. As a matter a fact the event is
held in an INDUSTRIAL ZONE called Raritan Center. Yes it is true
many offices are there, but they are all closed during the
celebrations. Across the street is the printing plant for The New
York Times. Deeper into the center are manufacturing facilities
including a major hub for UPS. As a matter a fact when I went to
the occasion last year, I did not hear any noise across the street.
So by now you are thinking there must be other problems such as
violence, damages... Well not really. The function coordinators
hire a LOT of security, parking attendants, as well as police. It
is held on private property owned by Raritan Center in a tent. How
much can you damage a tent!! There are a lot of benefits that this
function brings to the community. Many people are hired to put up
the tent, security and business vendors.
So what about compromise. That was tried, an attempt was to reason
with the town on the noise level. Well that was not good enough
for City Hall. So what is the big deal if it does not happen?
Well, this is not just a religious occasion, families come to
celebrate this occasion in order to celebrate religion and culture.
I do not know the number of PEOPLE (of all cultures) that attend,
but it has to be in excess of 100,000. It had gained so much
recognition that Governor Whitman attended last year. When ABC
covered the story did not mention any violence, noise or damage,
but what a great celebration this was.
So what is the problem with City Hall? I can only ASSUME because
they have not bought up any other complaints. So you will need to
ASSUME as well. I believe it is an effort to curb the Indian
culture in this area. It amuses me to find out that the KKK have
the right to put up a cross in a public park during the sacred time
of Christmas, but the Indian culture cannot make a little noise.
Even when we agree to control it!!!
WHAT CAN ****YOU**** DO
Write to the Mayor of Edison, the Council, and the Governor. The
Mayor has no control over the situation (this is a council
decision), but he is the Captain. Let him know you will attend the
Council Meeting (Time, address and direction below) If enough
people write, at least they will know a lot of people are watching.
If you do not have a lot of time, write a three sentence letter.
If you would like to know the outcome, please email me at
bhatnagar@aol.com.
Also show you support by sending a copy of your letter to Mr.
Pradip Kothari, President of Indo-American Cultural
