                      WORLDWIDE INDIAN NETWORK

The current immigration law, put together over the years in
bits and pieces, has some major inconsistencies that adversely
affect over 25,000 Indians. It takes years for the newly
married spouse of a permanent resident to get an immigrant visa.
To remedy this situation, Senator Donald Riegle of Michigan had
introduced Bill S.618 to the Senate to amend the Immigration and
Nationality Act (8 USCA 1182). This bill would have allowed the
spouses and children of permanent resident aliens to enter and
live in the United States temporarily as visitors or students
while waiting to obtain the immigrant visa status. Due to lack
of support, the bill did not succeed in the 103rd Congress.

We want to make a massive effort to reintroduce the bill in
the Senate as well as in the House of Representatives. If you
would like to help us in our efforts, please join the Committee
on the Family Reunification Project that the Network has
established. Send an e-mail to famr-win@cs.stanford.edu, with
SUBSCRIBE in the subject line, and your e-mail address (in small
letters only), home ZIP code, full name, and telephone number(s)
in the body using the following format:

	bhalder@lynx.neu.edu : 02128 : Mr Biswanath Halder H617-567-0667

A copy of the bill, and some facts and discussion about the
problem is available at the FTP Site of the Worldwide Indian
Network (WIN). FTP to 129.97.140.10 (plg.uwaterloo.ca). Login
as anonymous, and use your userid as the password. Then change
directory ("cd") to /pub/WIN, and type ls. The name of the file
	is "Family-R."

	   Thank you very much.
