Youth hangs himself to offer body for dowry money
NEW DELHI, India -- A teen-ager hanged himself and
asked his family to sell his organs to raise money
for his sisters' dowry, newspapers reported today.
The unemployed 19-year-old left a suicide note
saying he was the lone male in the family and
unable to afford the dowry for his two sisters,
the reports said.
Women often have to give money and expensive gifts
at their wedding and that frequently bankrupts
many families.
In recent years, some poor people have sold their
kidneys to raise money to pay off debts. The
Indian government has banned the practice, and the
dead man's family did not sell his organs.
