BJP emerging as front-runner: Advani

BJP IS EMERGING AS A FRONT-RUNNER FOR LOKSABHA ELECTIONS: LK ADVANI
Times of India, June 8, 1995

Ahmadabad: BJP president LK Advani today defended his party's support to the
BSP government in UP, headed by Mayawati, stating that the party's sole aim
was to dislodge the Mulayam Singh Yadav government.

Speaking to reporters in Ahamdabad, he said this move would not affect the
BJP-Shiv Sena alliance in Maharashtra which he said, was working smoothly.

He declined to comment on a possible alliance with the BSP during the next
general elections.

He said the events of the last six months were enough grounds for the
dismissal of the Mulayam Singh Yadav govt, but the Centre had failed in its
constitutional obligations. The BJP had, by its move, dislodged Mr Yadav
without Central intervention, Mr Advani said. He, however, refused to term
the move as opportunistic.

According to Mr Advani, the banned VHP and the RSS had also supported the
party's stand in UP.

Asked whether the BJP will pull down the Mayawati govt by withdrawing its
support, the BJP president hoped that the Mayawati government would run well
and complete its term.

He said the BJP was emerging as a front-runner in the coming Lok Sabha
polls due to series of events and decisions taken by the Centre including
Charar-e-Sharief in Kashmir adn the Supreme Court admonishment of Center in
the uniform civil code issue.

Mr Advani said the BJP's success in Gujarat and Maharashtra and its support
to the UP government had reinforced its national image. Till now, it was only
the Congress which was seen as a national party. However, the BJP had emerged
as a front-runner in the race for the Lok Sabha elections, he added.

Mr Advani said unless the BJP came to power at the Centre, there was no
question of starting construction work at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
