One of the biggest missconceptions about Hinduism is the "many gods"
interpretation. Hinduism IS monothesistic in nature. The many gods
that you hear about represent the different manifestations or
aspects of the same God. From the Upanishads (one of the principle
Hindu texts): "THE secret of immortality is to be found in the
purification of the heart, in meditation, in realization of the
identity of the Self within and Brahman without. For immortality
is union with God." In a nut shell, there are three basic "Gods"
making up the crux of it: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva; each representing
a different aspect.
(It's interesting, the more I learn about Hinduism, the more I see
instances where Christianity has "borrowed" from it - re-naming things
here, bending interpretations there...)
There are many good books available that will explain the different
aspects of God. I am new to this study and am writing totally
from memory, if I have stated anything that is not fully correct -
please set me straight.
