Why do we celebrate Deepavali
Deepavali is significant in many ways. It is celebrated to commemorate the victory of the good over the evil, the day the demon Narakasura was killed by Krishna and Satyabhama and it also a day of rejoicing because lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after killing Ravana. In northern India, Hindus and Sikhs celebrate the triumphant return of the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobindji. For Bengalis, it is the time to worship Goddess Kali or Durga. The Goddess Durga continued her "Vilaya Tandava" even after killing the demon Mahishasura .It is also the day when Lord Vishnu in Vamana avtar granted moksha to King Bali Charavarthy. For Gujaratis and Marwaris, the day of Laxmi Puja is the beginning of the financial year.
The first day of the festival Naraka Chaturdasi marks the vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama.
