Shahid Parvez, like Ustad Vilayat Khan, hails from the famous
lineage of the Etawa Gharana. He is the grandson of Ustad Wahid
Khan, the Surbahar and Sitar virtuoso and the younger brother
of Ustad Inayat Khan.
Before he learned to play the Sitar, Shahid was introduced to
vocal music and Tabla by his father, the late Ustad Aziz Khan,
a famous teacher, musician and composer. He received rigorous
training in all aspects of classical music before being initiated
into the art of playing Sitar.
Recognized as a child prodigy, Shahid gave his first public
performance at the age of eight. Since then he has had a meteoric
rise in the world of music and is today recognized, both nationally
and internationally, as one of the top performers on the Sitar.
Shahid Parvez is known for his outstanding "gayaki" style expression
of a Raga in its intorductory phase as well as improvising in every
aspect of the "gat" or the rhythmic structure of the Raga. He has
achieved a remarkable balance between the "gayaki" (i.e., vocal)
and the "tantrakari" (i.e., instrumental) styles of playing classical
music.
Shahid has performed in numerous music festivals in India and aborad.
He has been on several very successful tours of USA, Canada, France,
England, Germany, Holland, Russia, Japan and Australia. During the
months of October and November, 1995, he will be on his fourth
concert tour of the USA. He will be accompanied by Sri Vijay Ghate,
an internationally recognized Tabla player form Bombay.
