My two cents:
The chakras are not physical points or nerves one can touch or perform
surgery on. They are centres of consciousness that can be activated
by proper discipline, cleansing and practice under the guidance of a
qualified teacher. After a long period of time (try several years if not
decades or lifetimes), which varies with each individual, these
centres of consciousness can be experienced in terms of the colors,
the deities, the bij mantras, the petals of the lotus, etc as outlined
in the book by Avalon. The experiences come in meditation / dreams /
visions depending on the individual.
