Rudraksa is a kind of seed, reddish brown in color and quite round,
usually having five seams longitudinally. It is called "The tears of
God", and is thought to be very holy. Many schools of yogic thought
recommend it as the very best material out of which to make prayer bead
rosaries, also called "malas".
Many stores catering to Hindu and Buddhist practitioners have rudraksha
seeds available, either as a piece of jewelry or separately. I was very
surprised to see a large rudraksha as the centerpiece of a neo-primitive
"fetish" necklace in a regular retail store the other day. I wanted to
take it home so it wouldn't be exposed to any more unpleasant
shopping-mall vibrations!
As far as using a rudraksha as a pendulum, I have no experience in this
area. It sounds like a variation on the "dowsing" method of prescribing
dietary changes, flower essences, etc., which is so common in the
holistic health movement. I've never made a rudraksha pendulum, but
one common technique is as follows:
Get a piece of stainless steel chain about 4 inches long, and a metal
ring of the kind which is used to make key rings. Then attach the
pendulum (crystal, rudraksha, whatever) using a bale, using ahtever kind
of bale is best for maximum freedom of movement. To use the pendulum,
hang the ring over your middle finger on your non-dominant hand. Hold it
above the item in question.
You may wish to try some simple yes-and-no questions to which you already
know the answers, just so that you can see how your individual pendulum
gives its responses. (In my own case, I use an amethyst pendulum, and it
goes around in a circle for "yes", and back-and-forth for "no", but this
varies from pendulum to pendulum.)
Remember: take no rudraksha's advice (and no swami's advice, for that
matter!) without confirming it against your own common sense, intuition,
research, and with a medical practitioner if appropriate!!!
