As I have read and undestood, KAma is not 'emotions' as you have said, or
'erotica' as most people say. Vaisnava literatures describe it as the
'primeval reproducing energy'. The one verse that is the important to
describe here is this:
Om ka idam kasma adAt
KAmah kAmAyadAt.
KAmo dAtA, kAmah pratigrahitA
KAmah samudramAbishat.
Someone in this newsgroup posted his resolve that he would clean up Hindu
tradition of kanyAdAna, I dug out this verse to answer him. This verse
is known as KAmastuti, that is said in marriages.
The translation is:
Who gave away whom?
KAma is giving away to KAma.
KAma is donor, KAma is reciever
(and the bride and groom are) entered in the ocean of KAma.
As you see here, KAma is clearly the reproductive energy, that keeps the
sexual beings from extinction.
