Re: turtle
Hi Gary,
The story of turtle around Lord Vishnu is developed around the philosophy of Anava ( egoism, again
english does not a good equivalent). The story goes like this:-
The Devas due to the anava, were cursed by a great sage. As a result, the Devas were cursed with an
ugly form and lost all the spiritualism in them. The devas and Narada approached Vishnu for a
resolution to this problem and the Lord told them to stir the ocean of milk and obtain a nectar that will
release them from this predicament. to stir the ocean that big, the devas used a mountain.
While stiring, the mountain lost its balance and fell over its side. On praying to vishnu for help, the Lord
took the form of a turtle and lifted the mountain and held it on his back as an anchor. The devas were
then able to get the nectar.
In the midst of it all, another important event took place. Before the devas could get the nectar a
poison first arose from the ocean which could kill all of them. No one could help. Seeing this situation,
Lord Siva, who is know to even sacrifice himself for the Good Souls, came down and drank all the
poison himself. Seeing this could destroy Siva, his wife, being the mother to all, stopped the poison at
Siva's neck and prevented it from going down his stomach. This is why u see a blue spot on Siva's
neck in all his forms.
I hope this enlightens you.
