Well said! Shaivism and Vaishnavism are not mutually exclusive,
but it is not difficult to think of one possible source of the type
of remark V. S. Pai made above. Let us consider the history of
divisionism in this excerpt written by Troy Wilson Organ in
HINDUISM (Barron's Educational Series, Inc.; 1974):
"From the fifth to the eighth centuries, there was a conflict of
many Hindu cults in a struggle to win the allegiance of the common
people. Two cults survived: Vaishnavism and Shaivism. Their
conflict included the telling of rival legends which enhanced their
own deity. . . ."
I believe the time has arrived to work toward reunification.
