A few facts about that post:
- it originated in humanities.language.sanksrit
- someone asked for the Gayatri mantra, one of the most
sacred mantras
- Mani pointed out that mantras are to be received in person
from a guru, who is responsible for instructing the disciple
in the proper recitation, etc.
- someone else posted the mantra, lacking all diacritical marks,
instruction in its use, etc.
- Mani pointed out that it was reasons like that for his
opposition to posting the Gayatri mantra on Usenet.
It's common in India for mantras to be given _only_ by the guru to the
student. In that whole discussion above, nowhere was it suggested that
mantras should be restricted, only that the transmission of the mantra
should be done in a proscribed fashion.
All of this is pretty standard in many religions.
So, what was your point?
